Alliance Ireland has provided Primark with a property maintenance service for its stores in Ireland over the past twenty years. Alliance Property Maintenance were appointed as the main contractor for the conservation, repair and restoration works to Penneys (Protected Structure) 45-47 Mary St Dublin 1.

The contract was won on competitive tender and the conservation works involved the cleaning and repairs to the copper dome fronting Mary St, the repair and replacement of windows within the dome structure, the repointing of the brickwork, repair and replacement of windows to the facades of number 46 & 47 and the repairs and replacement of leadwork to the roof gutters, valley’s and parapets.

Apart from the conservation works the project presented number of additional challenges in the form of scaffolding on, above and over an extremely busy pedestrian street, maintaining a public entrance to the Penneys Department Store, several partial road closures, restrictive time windows for delivery of materials and practically 24/7 interface with the public and delivery vehicles using the street. Throughout the 12 week programme they provided a consistent professional approach in maintaining standards of health & safety, security and overall site management.

With specific reference to the conservation works they displayed a good knowledge and understanding of working on protected structures and maintained a very good working relationship with their specialist subcontractors, the project conservation architects Jack Coughlan Associates and the materials and technical consultants Consurv. I would welcome the opportunity to work with Alliance Property Maintenance on future projects of this nature should they arise.
